Nanna

Nanna
   The Sumerian god of the moon, whom the Akkadians called Sin. Nanna (or Nannar), who was especially popular during the Third Dynasty of Ur in the late third millennium B.C., had his main temple - called the Ekishungal - in the city of Ur. Another important cult center of Nanna was at Harran in western Mesopotamia. Nanna appeared in numerous Mes-opotamian myths, including those that called him the son of the chief god, Enlil; husband of the goddess Ningal; and father of Shamash, the sun god, and Inanna, goddess of sexual passion. In another myth, several gods get together and plot to steal the moonlight from Nanna, but Marduk (the Babylonian equivalent of Enlil) stops them. The people of Mesopotamia noted that the shape of the new moon resembled the horns of a bull, so they came to associate Nanna with the fertility of cattle.
